I got into turbulent flow via chaos. The transition to turbulence sometimes involves a period doubling. Turbulence itself is chaotic motion, it is unpredictable and sensitively dependent on initial conditions. What surprised me is all the ways turbulent flow is useful to us. It is diffusive, meaning it causes mixing. This is useful in jet engines or rocket nozzles (which Destin studies) and is important to achieve in microfluidic devices, which are so small that turbulent flow is actually difficult to achieve. Turbulent flow can energize a boundary layer, which is important to maintain flow attachment over a wing, maintaining lift and delaying stall. Similarly a turbulent boundary layer over a golf ball reduces pressure drag allowing golf balls to fly further. This is the reason for the dimples on golf balls. Flow transitioning to turbulence in the wake of a bluff body can create periodic vortex shedding. This beautiful phenomenon can be seen in the von Kàrmàn vortex street in clouds viewed from space. Turbulence is everywhere, in the air currents in a room, in your aorta, in the breaths you exhale, in oil pipelines and water pipes, in the flow over cars and ships and planes. Animals have evolved for it (like dead fish swimming up stream) and we have engineered our environment, our planes and golf balls for it. Laminar flow may be nice to look at (which is why we use it in decorative fountains) but turbulent flow does the real lifting.

I feel like an argument for laminar flow is because that it is so hard to ave. It is the unique condition in a world of chaos, and so one can really value those things that are rarer and harder to achieve. However, I find laminar flow boring, so turbulent flow ftw

Saying turbulence is diffusive is fundamentally not correct It is convective. Actually the diffusion term in NS momentum equation which increases viscosity has an opposite effect on vortices making up the turbulence and it dissipates them in form of heat energy. Diffusion is what kills turbulence and convection is what creates it and keeps it going

The vortex shedding makes me think that maybe the difference between laminar flow and turbulent flow is another artificial line in the sand. What we call laminar flow is just the result of a situation we set up to dampen the chaos so that something stable can happen. Our temporal perspective is part of the definition. Turbulent flow at the largest scales could still look like laminar flow down here, or the other way around. The ocean has waves and eddies at it's surface, but that's somewhat independent of the currents that circle the ocean. Fractal chaos?

I’d like to know what the turbulent flow looks like on 700c bicycle race wheels as they spin at various rim depths. Zipp NSW wheels incorporate dimples to create “micro stalls” and waves derived from the look of a whale fin, but does it really improve efficiency?

For your bit on the end about the flushable wipes. Our local water council urban utilities had to do a marketing campaign against flushable wipes cause they still don’t break down quick enough compared with toilet paper and were causing problems in the main sewerage system.

I don't really care much for the sponsoring company but it seems ridiculous that non flushable wipes exist. There should be campaigns and legislation to replace non flushable wipes with flushable ones... Sure they're just stupid wipes but the damage they pose from accidental flushing is big as even you have shown. And just because other non flushable wipes are not flushed doesn't necessarily mean they can be ignored as if they may not pose a problem elsewhere.... No one needs wipes that last a long time given they're one time use products...

I love your videos and concepts, I love turbulence as the way they are and love those materials you use to show turbulence, like some kids balls these days in Kmart or toy shops but I love laminar flow too. It’s awesome as waterfalls that are chaotic transitioning to turbulence look awesome but small ones too. Their respective sound that they produce has same effect I.e disturbing or chaotic vs calm or pleasant. But I like both. Enjoy world

Every documentary on tv with wind turbines, supersonic jets in scale models in a wind tunnel, every simplified explaination of aerodynamics, the flow of your hose to a river, to an ocean, it never failed to frustrate me beyond belief it'd keep me awake at night going over and over it, that I damb well knew it physically behaves differently in scale but no one seems to bat an eyelash about actually explaining why! Re is one of those things you instinctively know but never have heard the name of it.
