Passing this in my feed again for some reason I feel the wish to comment that Kuwabara looks pretty dope in the thumbnail Dunno why I just always thought he looked good in the Dark Tournament. Random thumbnail commenter awaaaay!

I don’t like that tournaments are often used as an excuse to make the main character Actually Lose something. I’m basic. I like seeing the main guy win.

So I recently started watching Yu Yu Hakusho after having put it on my list back when this Trope Talk first came out. I’m about 24 episodes in. On one hand, I’m really enjoying it. On the other, there are definitely some parts that have not aged well, to put it mildly

In one of my books i did a tournent arc were 8 wanted to explore some chractors and also show of some chractors power lavel One chractor who was the main focus in that arc join the Tournament becuse he wanted revenge from that dude who killed his whole village or something another chractor joined becuse he thought it would be a nice Training and the main cast wanted that woman who runs the place dead becuse resaons and after i finished the chractors exploration thing instad of just ending the arc like any normal person i made one chractor who's Nicknamed {the unchained wolf} say "fuck the system" and turned the Whole place into a war zone and i used that to show how strong the wolf is Tl'dr a Tournament happened then shit hit the fan

The final tournament of the YuYu Hakusho manga was really interesting as well. Mostly because it got cut off about mid-way to the question "how did that tournament end anyway?" What happened was that all the strongest fighters met in the beginning, then went to their next fights tired and lost and a few iterations of this later and a rather insignificant character won with absolutely nothing worth screen time since the half-way point. Really strange in *so* many ways, I just love how it messed with the expectations even more that MHA's tournament arc.

2:20 Using Seven Deadly Sins as an example is kinda ironic because not only is the object in question not a MacGuffin, the main characters were going to end up with it regardless with or without the tournament (probably via Diane getting impatient and just leaving with it) Not to mention that it's not even really a tournament arc, it's maybe three episodes long and doesn't really serve any purpose besides introducing Cain and his prior connection to Meliodas. Otherwise, it's just an excuse for Ban and Meliodas to kick the shit out of each other for no reason besides the raw funsies
The Radioactive Player
I think, of all the things I've watched, Kengan Ashura has the single worst tournament arc. It is just _so_ boring after a while, and the audience expectations get subverted so often that you know within 10 minutes of a character's appearance whether they'll win or not. My genuine favourite character was a fisherman who appeared in one episode, died in that episode, and was never mentioned again. Why? Because he was the most compelling human being in the entire show. Bearing in mind _the actual main character_ is less interesting than this one middle-aged rural fisherman. That is how *_staggeringly_* boring Kengan Ashura gets.

Would've been interesting to see this trope explored outside of the anime space...? It's super-prominent in the early Harry Potter books for example.

I'd like to say that Ninjago does an incredible tournament arc. There are many protagonists that lose and get their powers stolen and many plot twists. For example, the main protagonist loses. This allows the antagonist to start a spell that transforms his cult into snakes. It also has a good explanation as to why the protagonists don't cheat. I highly reccoment it for anyone who's bored over a weekend!

@Overly Sarcastic Productions I haven't been watching My Hero Academia, but I watched this video last week and decided to give it a chance. By the end of episode 13 I was hooked. Now even knowing how the tournament arc plays out because of this video, it is absolutely electrifying. I think it shows just how well executed this tournament arc is that despite knowing the outcome is going to subvert the trope, it still feels epic. Truly masterful. Thank you for the recommendation!

I remember when my DM tried to run a tournament arc, and we played along. At first. Then I tried to steal the Maguffin that was being offered as a prize between matches. Which led to finding out it was a decoy and the real Maguffin was on the (evil) tournament organizer. Who we then attacked and bypassed a whole plot point by skipping right to the boss fight.

Bakugo's actor loses his voice for this role...not regularly, but it does happen. That's how he does it. It's kinda funny listening to him talk in real life because he has none of Bakugo's gruffness until someone in the audience asks for his favorite line (it's me) and he belts out "DIE!" into the microphone.

The first tournament arc I saw in an anime was in the first season of Pokemon. Ash made it to the quarter finals but was being pushed against the ropes. He then decides to summon Charizard who couldn't give any less of a f*ck causing Ash to loose the match by forfeit

What about training tournament arcs which are set up to train the characters (I use this every once in a while because my setting is an infinite multiverse to help balance out the main group of characters powers/abilities in my writing along with introducing the capabilities of the location such as a magic school where they have resurrection magic which makes it so as long as the parents sign a permission form there kids can enter into a death tournament to determine who's the best on the low end out of the school and later on between multiple schools (I like writing by roleplaying my characters)
Vanillastump 2 ヶ月 前
Would "Interrupted Tournament arc" be a trope? Because Both Naruto and DragonBall Z do this. The Chunin exams in Naruto ends in an invasion, and the buu saga begins with a tournament that stops when Gohan's power gets stolen by some guy he wasn't fighting. I'm like 90% sure there are more.

Aye man, if I'm watching a Shonen anime, I expect a tournament arc. In fact I'll be disappointed if I don't get one. They're hella necessary and allow our hero to beat out increasingly more badass opponents which is awesome. Sure sometimes the hero loses at the semi-finals or finals but that introduces us to someone even more badass, which inand of itself...is badass....you feel me?

The Zombie Knight once had a really interesting tournament arc, where a god was searching for a suitable vessel to resurrect another god. Several members of the party that found him had the requisite quality to serve as one (Supreme Will), and argued over who it should be. So the god decided to pit everyone in the room against each other, on the theory that it would come to a decision somehow and that hey, in a crucible like this someone else could find their Supreme Will. What makes this interesting is that (a) it was short, and (b) the motivations of the characters were all over the place, as were their capabilities. Some of them were normal people, while some were superpowered "servants" or in one case had an arsenal of magic items. Some characters wanted nothing to do with the prize or felt they had no possible chance and surrendered immediately (letting them do that is why the god felt it was reasonable to include *everyone*). The tournament was taking place inside a giant treasure vault, so some characters were much more interested in looting than competing, or powered up midway by grabbing a powerful magic item. And in one case, a character "fought" by arguing to the god that his (obviously much more powerful) opponent was afraid of the dead god's power and would want to hide it away rather than accepting it.

A tournament arc I really like (though, admittedly, not anime) is season 4 of Ninjago (SPOILERS). The whole premise is that there's a tournament of elements where elemental masters fight each other on Chen's island, and Chen tells the ninja that he has Zane, their teammate who they thought was dead. But a lot of the tournament is more about spying and trying to find Zane, figure out what's going on, and eventually how to get the other competitors on their side. And when the tournaments going down, they're trying their hardest not to lose because if they do, they get kicked out and captured. Plus, there was character related issues going on too (Garmadon's past, Lloyd learning about his father's past, Cole and Jay still mending their friendship after fighting for the same girl the previous season, and Kai's relationship with Skylor who he just met). Also, the whole tournament was actually a trick Chen made to get the elemental masters to willingly come to one place so he can take their elemental powers. The tournament is also a really clever way of making competitors not realizing or caring when a loser goes missing. It was really good and I love it and definitely recommend watching it.

I think one of the reasons why Yugioh managed to be popular despite the entire show being a series of tournament arcs that Yugi literally cannot afford to lose (don't worry, he loses like 3 duels ever, so he's in his comfort zone) but the series is always introducing new characters, new cards, and new playstyles. I think that's a large part of what keeps Yugioh so entertaining. Every villain approaches Yugi with a new, unique deck with some old familiar cards, and some crazy new ones. So, every time Yugi gets prepared to duel, we're excited to see what kind of cool new cards are going to be in this villain's deck.

I don't know like the scene int the movie when Baku takes dekus power lol glow and talk about sharing similar dreams and deli being sure about sacrificing those after all who understands more then Baku the man slash friend who reinforced all of dekus insecurities mane I'm just saying maybe dekus was suppose to be gay??? Does anyone know for sure i read that RANMA 1/2 WAS SUPPOSE TO BE A RANKO AKANE LOVE STORY ORIGINALLY BUT IT WAS THE 90S IDK That scene was pretty fucking romantic is why I question hey maybe the writers are hinting at something.

Ok so idea: have a tournement as your 1st arc to introduce your whole cast and their quirks without getting stale so its all new. Then have it semi low stakes so the protagonist doesnt HAVE to win and its instant character development for the victor

Kengan Ashura's Kengan Annihilation Tournament. The stakes are pretty high but not so high that the main character can't lose. It also happens to be my favourite tournament arc of all time. I would also HIGHLY recommend reading the manga. The anime cut a lot of really important content and although the CGI isn't terrible, the manga has my favourite artstyle in manga history straight up.

Say what you will about black clover but the royal knights exam is genuinely a good tournament arc. First off the main character doesn’t need to pass the exam to be involved in the plot, all the examinees were evaluated on their performance in the tournament with the winners obviously being apart of the royal knights. Second (spoilers), the main character didn’t even win and his rival along with a girl who has feelings for him did. The tournament was team based and a backstory in the arc gave us some interesting world building to the life of those who aren’t royalty. It also introduced some foreshadowing to a potential threat in stage two of the war arc so it connected the story pretty well. We get plenty of new abilities showcased as well which are necessary for a shounen plot.

In my book. I have something like this. Where the main charecters have to win against some minor villain in a dance battle in order to win. the plot twist? it was entirely unnessecary, and the heros only THOUGHT that they would get killed if they lost. its ends with them being frustrated at the lost of time. (but its nessecary for the main relationship)

The archie Sonic comics did one of these arcs incredibly well. The prize was a chaos emerald, but the twist was that there were multiple protagonist characters all on the same side trying to get it. The question wasn't *if* they'd win the competition, but *who* would win it. The reason they didn't just steal the emerald was because they knew that would cause problems later, and they couldn't buy it off the person in charge because she had an ulterior motive with the competition.
