Congratulations you played yourself. Electric cars will never work. The grid already can’t keep up with all the charging, just look at california, telling people not to charge their EV’s LMAO. Not to mention, everyone sitting there for 30 minutes to 1 hour to get MAYBE half battery charged, enjoy, asshole 🥂

I'm really impressed with how well Rivian seem to be nailing it with their target audience, while making a truck & suv that is still a good functional vehicle for anyone. I'm glad they're not trying to out-quirk all the other EV competitors and seem to be focusing on utility and ergonomics, while throwing in a bunch of handy stuff for outdoors like the speaker & leveling setting. I'm hoping the long term reliability is fair on these.

@Evan Anderson They actually start at $72k and go up to 95k. They’re the same entry point as a lot of other options most American families such as myself have with large SUV’s. Like Tahoes, Suburbans, Escalades and Navigators. People right now are taking the huge tax rebate, than turning around and selling them for much over MSRP. Some are the first launch editions as well so when these are readily available in 16-24 months then they will reflect those prices. I’m currently looking to buy a 2022 R1T with 460 miles. The adventure for $89k and trying to work it down to $85 which was what that one sold for new with all the options it had.

I hope that in “pet mode” there’s something to indicate to well-meaning passers-by that the air conditioner is on, so they don’t smash the window to rescue your dog. Extremely not a fan of central-screen controls for everything, though. Being able to quickly adjust vents, steering wheels, etc. in a direct tactile way is way faster and easier, even if it isn’t as “fancy.”

I like these better than the R1T and I think they look better too. But I can’t stand the pop-out door handles, those things should be abolished from the car industry I’m also disliking the trend of putting every interior control into one “infotainment” center. Basic functionality of daily used controls should have physical buttons. Sifting through menus to change your ac is an unnecessary complication and distraction.
Meadmaker 452
Meadmaker 452 ヶ月 前
When you have to go through a menu system to try to find your AC controls, and then grab a little icon thingy on the screen and drag it around to where you want the air to blow, all while 70mph+ on the highway and not watching where you're going, you know you have a design fail on your hands. I like technology, and the AC adjustment gimmick is cute, but it's definitely not practical. Futuristic shouldn't by synonymous with impracticality or unsafe driving.

Love it, but seems like there were a couple of big misses for those with kids. No cup holders for 2nd row if using middle seat. Seat belts in third row seem like they would be very difficult for younger kids to reach as they are attached high and further back.

I can name some things I want that it doesn't have. 1. Decent front-end styling. 2. a sunroof that opens. 3. Physical buttons for often used and safety related stuff like adjusting mirrors, etc. I hate going through on-screen menus while driving!

I think Rivian makes a beautiful car. I won’t be a buyer until they are more established though. My experience with Tesla and the brutal service was enough for me to steer clear of new entrants. I would seriously consider one of these for the family vehicle. The only problem is it doesn’t seem to be very practical for long trips as in more than the vehicles range. Hopefully the infrastructure gets to the point where one of these vehicles can take a charge and 15 minutes or less
James Tucker Realtor
I was extremely excited for this car. I was going to be an early depositor and purchase one. I didn’t just because of my personal experience with Autos over the years. In my personal opinion and speaking only for myself, I believe you should never purchase the first model. Wait until it’s out and all the mistakes come to the public and the company fixes everything with the second generation. For example with this Rivian. Imagine driving down the road and having to adjust either the seat or the mirrors or the air vents from some ridiculous screen while doing 70-75 even 80 on a Monday morning while drinking coffee and trying not to die or kill anyone on I-95 in December when it’s grey wet dark and frozen. Or worse. Imagine you’re a Married Man driving this Rivian on your family vacation in Florida and you have a wife and daughters. Just imagine trying to fix the air vents for two daughters and a wife while navigating again I-95 in august along with rest of the east coast and that passenger load plus the Golden Retriever while trying to find the beach house you rented, how long before you just mash that accelerator to the floor as you jump lanes heading straight for the fastest oncoming semi just to find some quiet time in the icu or the morgue??? I really love this suv but it’s still no equal to a 55 Chevy Nomad. I also had no idea it was going to be so small. I personally have dogs and love the utilitarian interior my wife might like it also, not the vent nonsense but the utilitarian stuff. It’s overpriced though because you can still get a Tahoe High Country with bench seats and a Z71 suspension and 10,000 pound towing capacity for around $70 with all the incentives. Again personally I live in Southlake Texas. We average a lot of 100 degree days and Doug who usually mentions really cold AC didn’t mention that. I wonder if it can hang with a Texas summer and fishing on the Gulf??? Lots and lots of pluses but some really big minuses for me.

I'm on the pre-order list (almost 1 year now) for the R1S. Glad you like it, Doug. I, however, may be canceling my pre-order for two reasons which you don't mention at all in your video: First, the entertainment system is essentially non-existent: No satelite radio, No Apple CarPlay or Android integration. A Travesty at this price point. Second, the huge sunroof is a solar collector with no mechanical or electro-optical shade option. I live in sunny Colorado and don't wish to be baked in my vehicle when left in a parking lot or driving mid-day. How could these over-sights have been made?

I wanted to see more of the navigation/android auto function. It seems a bit too expensive for how sparce the interior felt. A feature I always look for now is visibility from the driver seat. Yeah that's the one gripe I have with EV's is how empty the interior is. I really don't like how everything is done from the screen. Like those touch climate vents are such a waste of money on actuators and motors... Just put regular vents in the thing.

I can’t believe you spent the first two minutes of the review glowing over the remote phone app and remote start and a/c abilities of the car. My 2016 Chevy Volt had this six years ago as does my 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-e and as do most modern vehicles. I don’t see Rivian breaking much new ground with this vehicle nor do I find it very attractive looking. That said I don’t find their pickup attractive at all either. Am I the only one missing something here?!
Capybara Cosmonaut
Somehow so similar to Tesla in terms of driver controls, but also seeming much less driver-hostile and far better thought out. Much closer to getting minimalism right. Not that many more physical controls, but some really important ones that would be such a huge quality-of-life upgrade to my Model 3. Come on Rivian, get to making a Model 3 competitor!
David Sahsah
David Sahsah ヶ月 前
Doug, how have you never seen a car that can remotely roll down the car’s windows through the app? My 2016 Lexus Is200t (I know I should’ve upgraded to the 350) can do that and more through the app. It can turn n the engine, unlock or lock the doors, see each tires PSI, check how many miles of range your current fuel level will provide, and you can even heat or cool the cabin remotely. You can also do all this through even a smart watch! Now that’s like some 007 shit. Only downside is you need a pay for a monthly subscription to get all that functionality, once the free trial ends.

Hope to see Rivian succeed. Hate to be that guy (or I love it) but as usual: most of the "interesting tech" was found in a Tesla 10 years ago e.g. unlocking via app, venting windows, locating vehicle, pre-conditioning, etc. It's only worth noting this since Doug claims it as new/something he's never seen before.

Love your Enthusiasm! I invested in Rivian last year. I’m in the red right now but still hoping this becomes the next Tesla in which case I’ve told myself I’d use the money to buy the Rivian. I’m also looking forward to a two drive wheel model at a lower price. We are long retired and I’d want the Rivian to replace the CRV’s we’ve been leasing for the past 20 years. So I hope they lease but also I’m thinking maybe instead of leasing for 3 years I’d buy a Rivian and keep it for 10. Also , how about Roadside Assistance and Servicing? I’m assuming low maintenance but I’d have to have reassurances for the what ifs. Will Rivian partner with other brand dealerships so you can access services through them? I realize you’re not a sales rep but if you were you’d sell a million of them. Thanks!!!

Like 80k for a car isn't insane. I really struggle with this when I watch these kinds of videos, because it's like stepping into a world I am by no means inside.
Allosaurus Fragilis
I know it's clever but having to go to a screen and menus to enable a control to move an air vent is not better than just sliding it with your finger, that takes two seconds. Car makers are taking it too far with the control screens. . Also, they are difficult to touch when car is moving and you have to take your eyes off the road for longer. Lots of people have said this but if we don't, that's what we'll end up with in every car. Touch screens are fine for reading data / maps etc when you are stopped. Under way they are not as functional as buttons, switches and round controls. They just aren't. These are quicker and can be done without looking once you've learned them. Tech is great. Tech for techs sake is not.

The front end design is my favorite part. It's hard to come up with a distinctive yet good looking front end design in a sea of sameness. I think they nailed it. If they don't go out of business, I can see this front end becoming as iconic as Jeep's vertical grill

I love smart screens and tech as much as everyone else but the fact that you have to go into the screen and through a bunch of different layers just to change your mirror position would be hard to get used to. I think I like a mix of new and old school. That said, beautiful SUV.
Think and Grow Rich
The "Value" score should be a 10 as well, so this should score a 76. It is quicker than a X5M, but carries more people, has more cargo space, and is much cheaper Compare it to the new Escalade V, and you save $40k, and it does 0-60 over a second quicker? There is nothing that compares to it favorably, hence a 10 value score is necessary

I'm 10 minutes in and I honestly can't believe that this SUV manages to be this perfect and still offer THREE rows of seating. I have owned two Jeep Grand Cherokees in my life and they were both great, but this SUV honestly looks better than both of them while also offering a third row. (which I personally don't need, but that's amazing!)

Personal experience....that 3rd row, in a SUV this size, stops being useful as soon as your kids get past 6 years old. Until then, very usable. Just never expect to place an adult back there for more than 15 minutes.

@Ethan not only the 1000 miles battery would put a truck into a Rolls Royce price range, but also will make it heavier than a couple of Humvees. At that point a much greater part of the battery would be used to just haul the vehicle itself. So no - it's not as linear of a dependency as for the gas vehicles. R T is spot on here.
Miles Comparetto

@R T Do you have a source for that? I just skimmed through the report and the only mentions of 2100 are for very grave conditions. Projections for when we will be ok by 2100 are clearly pointing out that is only if we continue to make changes to our infrastructure, lifestyles, diet etc. I really don't think you know what the hell you are talking about. If we do nothing:"Taking the high-carbon pathway, the worst of the scenarios, would see global temperatures rise by more than 4ºC by the end of the century. To add some perspective to that scenario, the world has not seen temperature increases of more than 2.5ºC over such a short space of time for more than 3 million years."-IPCC

Looks great! Especially that air compressor feature which is extra handy, BUT from a product development standpoint, not having electronic third row seats at the price point truly is a fail. Why? Because a third row is a feature that attracts families with three children or more. However, because the vehicle is not as long as a Suburban/YukonXL etc, the owner, likely a mom, will constant be putting the third row seats up and down for groceries, sports equipments, and strollers etc. To require them to have to crawl into the trunk to actually do that is unacceptable for $85k. My 2021 Denali which was $83k has that. Even the Tahoe Premier which is $74k has it. Hopefully they add it for the following year’s body style.

Well, I wish I could be as enthusiastic as Doug, but I am not. And not just for a Rivian, that goes for every car that has been built since day one. It either has what I want or it doesn't. But there is no reason to go overboard like Doug does. Why did they make it shorter that the pick-up? A shorter wheelbase means less driving comfort. And all that electronic stuff that can be done is all ok, as long as it works. However, if it quits to work you are looking for big repair bills. Since everything is controlled by the computer, good luck to get it fixed in the middle of nowhere. Thanks, but no thanks!

How you gave this a 7 in styling, 9 in fun factor, and a 7 in cool factor over a Model X Plaid with a 5, 7 and a 6 is very confounding. I realize you prefer big boxy SUV’s, but scoring doesn’t make sense comparing it to a Model X Plaid imo. Not to mention you didn’t mention charging network in comparison to other electric vehicles. Great SUV for sure, just odd choices in conclusions. IMO.

Since when is an $85K vehicle limited to those in the "1%"? Anyone with a 6-figure income and some sense of personal finance skills should be able to comfortably afford one of these, if they so choose. Some of this tech, is "yesterdays news". Like the app related things. I feel Doug is talking about this as it was dealbreaking. I'm not a Tesla fan, but they have a lot of cool tech, and they were first in this situation. And I know, and understand that this situation is the same for many other brands, but I think it's cool to let people know who did what. BTW, take a look at a car named Hongqi E-hs9. This is what I drive, since I can't have Cadillac. Also BTW, I live in Norway, and the Hongqi, as many other Chinese brands has become quit popular in Norway.

Well Doug... my BMW X5 35d (diesel) gets up to 36 mpg (imperial gallon). Giving it a 600 mile plus range. Now when I stop for fuel it takes about 10 minutes to fill pay and drive away to do another 600 miles. Your Rivian can't compete in the real world because of the RANGE it has. If you drive that behemoth in the real world of 20 or 30 Below Zero F. weather, you are going to have to stop and charge that Pig every 150 to 200 miles depending on the wind. So, I ask as to how on earth you can compare this thing to a real air polluting internal combustion vehicle. The power that that thing uses will be 2 times the carbon footprint as my dirty BMW . By the way don't think that all that GREEN POWER has not cost our world 's health dearly either, as it is 125% more efficient to burn coal to produce power than it is to have any and all of the components of GREEN ENERGY produced. Just don"t understand as to how a seemingly smart chap as yourself could be brainwashed into falling for the EV LIE.

Vent windows? Unlock anywhere in the world via app? Walk up unlock? Camp mode? Dog/Pet Mode? Car wash mode? All Available with Tesla too. Maybe even other EVs too. What is cool in the Rivian: Air Compressor, AC Inverter, flat fold down seats, self leveling for camping, way more USB-C outlets, Camp Courtesy mode. Thanks for the review!

Disappointed by a few things, SUV without glove box , for the price, they could have added $3k and have power up and down on all the back seats, the front side light features do not also have the turn signal light up (only the small oval rings) , this is a wishful thinking, but a dual mode sun roof cover that has a 50% obscuring mesh and a reflective 100% cover that has insulated bottom in case it heats up so passengers do not burn themselves, and the last wish i had was a manual or automatic with manual window cover 50% mesh that is reinforced to be able to withstand children trying to poke it out , that seals the exterior from mosquitoes and other harmful bugs, while also providing shade for the hard side sun (it is not that hard to implement modularity and easy to replace , and they have a part that can be sold at a considerable mark up with proprietary secure connection to the motorized frame)
