Serious RESPECT for every aspect of this video! The people working in that cramped space with several forges, that heat, wow. Also, the camera work was wonderful for such a dark, dusty and dangerous place to move around in. Awesome use of ambient lighting. Then the woodworking... just wow. That bespoke hydraulic chiseling machine is amazing. I will watch this over several more times. Japanese workmanship is top notch and they prove it every day, folks.

My jaw literally dropped when the planer was able to extract that thin sheet from the wood. Literally paper thin. Amazing craftmanship.

Did you know that there are wood shaving competitions in Japan where the thinnest and longest strip wins? Literally down to the microns. To create smooth wooden surfaces, they use these planes instead of sandpaper.

@trappenweisseguy27
@trappenweisseguy27 5 ヶ月 前
They actually have competitions over there where they are judged on how thin and long a shaving they can make. This has a practical background though because wooden surfaces were all finished by hand before the advent of sandpaper. A planed surface has a better surface finish than a sanded one anyways.
@AO-bl7cc
@AO-bl7cc 4 ヶ月 前
@@trappenweisseguy27 They can adjust the same plane to remove more wood or less. Japanese handplanes are adjustable. As far as sandpaper or planed surface, it's not so much as what's better, as to what you want the final product to be. If you want to varnish or paint the surface. Sandpaper is better because it roughs up the surface allowing paint, glue, and varnish to stick to the surface. If you want a pure natural unpainted/unvarnished finish, then a planed surface is better because not only does it make it harder for things like paint to stick to it, it also makes it harder for water and moisture to absorb into the wood surface.
