Since he was fired for having sexual relations with everyone in the office, do you think he was doing it with coworkers of both sexes?

I was absolutely livid when I read this final portion of the book. The way he gaslighted these women and never wavered in his justification made my hands shake. The dynamic was written in so well.

Fortunately, this movie has a traditional ending for a suspense movie made by Hollywood where the killer dies.

Wow Emily blunt truly powerful acting. She really did the addict bit perfectly. Poor thing it's funny in every movie Emily blunt takes a lot of hits Like a champ. She's a bit masochistic with respect to her film choices or does the directors find her perfect for such roles? Amazing how she uses her high pitch during emotional scenes, makes my heart melt.. truly powerful stuff, I thought this was a movie for women and all but it's good overall.. nice story. And Emily blunt, do I say more, she's the bomb.

@Alyssa Ramos Emily Blunt is way too pretty. Rachel in book is fat someone unattractive beacuse of her drinking habit. Also the book gives you way more depth and feels than movie. But acting is great in movie. I just always prefer books to movies.

Why do you think Tom started gaslighting Rachel's memory once she started drinking after she couldn't get pregnant? Because he was disappointed in her?

This movie gives an accurate portayal of narcissistic abuse.

Sisyphus27 because he was a full on narcissistic psychopath. A compulsive liar with little to no sympathy who always made others feel guilty over his own mistakes. Violence is a matter of choice. With or without Rachel, it was a matter of time before he killed someone.
Sisyphus27 年 前
Why do you think he blamed Rachel for the murder of Megan? Suggesting that Megan might still be alive if Rachel had just stayed away on the night of the murder. He might still have killed Megan after learning of her pregnancy even if Rachel had not discovered them together.
sadako24 年 前
I think he found her frustrating and embarrassing when she got drunk, and a liability to his status. He couldn't control his temper with her maybe once or twice, and was so relieved when he realized she couldn't remember what he did to her the morning after, that he started concocting the lies. Firstly to make sure she couldn't brand him an abuser for that one time he lost control, but gradually because it became so easy for him to just use her as his punching bag and sewer for all his frustrations and resentments, and despise her all the more for being too weak to stand up for herself, and because she was too drunk and illucid for it to get through to her. To his mind she was a lost cause and that justified everything he said and did to her. Once he'd started down that path, it became the only way he could function whilst maintaining his image and composure, so it wasn't long before Megan and Anna became the victims of his ugly side too. The difference is, because Megan hit back, and threatened to expose his cheating ways, he was so surprised and affronted because he wasn't used to it, that he suddenly decided if he couldn't control her he had to erase her.

Why do you think Tom told Anna to stay?
Or he just didn't want her to call the police.
Jayant Singh
Jayant Singh 年 前
Sisyphus27 Good question. I was wondering it too. I guess he told her to stay, because he wanted her wife to see how he can be powerful in front of Rachael , that how he can control the situation and that she better not question his actions otherwise she will see the same fate. He is always confident and taking risks. But the truth is, things are always falling apart from his hands.

I was hoping this movie might actually show that women can abuse men. Also, are the police obligated to show up once a connection is made?
sadako24 年 前
_I was hoping this movie might actually show that women can abuse men_ Well the point was that Rachel felt forever guilty because Tom managed to gaslight and convince her that she had been the abusive one. The ending is the vindication for this. She doesn't let him manipulate her, but she goes there to rescue Anna from a potentially dangerous partner and gains the cathartic clarity of calling Tom out for what he is and what he did, tries to leave it in the hands of the police to deal with, but only resorts to violence against him when she needs to defend herself, and the significant point at the end is that she herself didn't kill Tom and didn't want to.
