Why did Anna shove the screw deeper to her already close to dying, murderous, cheating husband? Because, it's NEVER ENOUGH, never, never...

Unfortunately, since Hollywood rarely comes up with any REAL GOOD movies anymore, this movie will get recycled and there will be a re-make in another 20 years.

So, Megan was always aware of Rachel, and even knew all the story, she knew that the man she was seeing was a piece of crap.

As far as the police are concerned, only Rachel did it, and it was self-defence.

I thought Anna killing him was kind of stupid to be honest, I think it should of been left at Rachel having stabbed him in the throat and him dying on the ground that to add on to his wife adding herself into his killing by screwing in the corkscrew. Just made it less believable especially for a mother to risk going to prison as her assistance to his death when he's already down and out of commission was enough and that Rachel had enough reasonable justification for self defense in a court of law. That scene was what removed me from enjoying the film.

It showed that Anna was disgusted at her husband, having seen his true colors (and to a degree she now saw him as a threat to their child because of what he was capable of).

Dude in scenarios like this know one acts rationally very real.

Damn I wanted to slap Anna during this scene and the equivalent in the Novel. She was obviously very selfish and callous but was she seriously so proud of the idealistic appearance of her family that she was willing to let her husband get away with two murders to keep it intact?

Self defense was Rachel stabbing him, murder was Anna's attack - he might have lived (and gone to prison) had she left him alone. Considering there was a previous murder in the case, likely the police would have left it up to a Grand Jury to decide if Anna committed a second murder, rather than a detective releasing them based on their similar stories. P.S. I took a special interest in this film, because long before the book was written I was a passenger on the same rail line (the Metro-North Hudson Line from Grand Central that stops at Ardsley-on-Hudson) - but I didn't see Rachel...

Although Anna was shocked to learn of Tom's true violent nature, why do you think she stood by and watched when he was choking Rachel?
Son Of Hibbs
Son Of Hibbs 年 前
She still loved the atom she thought he was. Even after learning the truth about someone close to you, you absolutely can’t just turn off feelings. No matter how hurt or how afraid you are. Most people don’t understand that, but it’s the truth. The mind would rather give benefit of the doubt than fully SEE what wretched creature has been close to you.

Sadako24, yes exactly. But then she realised that Tom could never fully trust her and that she and her child would never be safe. So that's when she called an ambulance/police and finished the job to make sure he was dead.

How do you think Tom rationalized his claim that Rachel was in a way responsible for Megan's death? He tells her that if she had just stayed away the night of the murder and left them alone, it would not have happened. But he still might have killed Megan anyway to avoid having the affair exposed, even if Rachel had not been there to see them.

Narcissism for sure, and i can confirm that cuz i know people like this. They are manipulative and great liers. I love the psychological content on this movie. Amazing film.
He blames her for getting him ‘wound up.’ In the book; Anna was supposed to go out with her girlfriends that night. She walked to the station and ran into Rachel. She got upset and ran back home cancelling her plans. Megan had been calling Tom threatening to come to the house, needing to talk to him. If Anna had gone out like she was supposed to, Tom claimed he would have been able to talk to Megan at the house, cool as a cucumber, and would’ve been able to calm Megan down and persuade her to not have the baby. But because Anna came back, he had to lie to her to get out of the house, say he was going to ‘look for Rachel.’ He ran into Rachel and enraged, he beat her. He was furious. So he tells himself because of her, he snapped so easily on Megan. Stupid I know. All abusive pathological liars do that. Blame victims for their actions. I suppose even without the detailed book version, Tom is no different anyway.

How do you think Rachel's relationship with Anna changed after they killed Tom? Certainly they would never be bosom friends since Anna had stolen Rachel's man and house and since Rachel had taken Anna's baby out of the house, but now they had both been cheated on by Tom and would be forever connected by having killed him, do you think their relationship improved to a certain degree?
Rems 8 ヶ月 前
You ask waaaay too many questions, @Sisyphus27
87alsjth it’s not that serious kid ! It’s just a movie
sadako24 年 前
_and since Rachel had taken Anna's baby out of the house_ On that particular point I think Anna, whilst freaked out at the time, would now see that behaviour in hindsight in the context of just how much Tom had ruined Rachel and caused her to go strange, and that maybe it was even a cry for help on Rachel's part. That when Rachel tells Tom in front of Anna how he convinced her how horrible and worthless she was but now she sees the truth, it was as much a vindication for Anna as for Rachel herself to see clearly that she was a misunderstood victim in this, and now she was on the road to getting well again. _and would be forever connected by having killed him_ The thing is though, I don't think Rachel did want Tom dead. She stabbed him in the heat of the moment to defend herself, but I think she would've rather Tom had lived and gone to prison. I think she would've hated the fact that Anna not only murdered Tom, but did so in a way that made her partly responsible. They agreed to the lie because it was the least complicated way round it. But I think actually Rachel would be slightly scared of what Anna was capable of, and that if Anna was found out, she might implicate Rachel with her (infact in the book, there is a subtle hint of Anna holding it over Rachel that she can tell the police what really happened any time, as potential blackmail fuel).
Sisyphus27 I'd like to think they became friends. But as far as the books go I'm not so sure. And this all depends on the person Anna is. Once Anna realizes Tom's been cheating on her, she doesn't direct her anger towards him but towards Meghan. And notes that while she was wrong about Rachel being the one involved, she still doesn't like her, regardless of the fact that Rachel never wronged her (in fact, at one point Anna revels in the excitement of when she was "the other woman" who 'stole' Tom away from Rachel, which...yikes); "I've been hating the wrong woman, and yet knowing this doesn't make me dislike Rachel any less". Yep, Anna who enjoyed the illicit thrill of playing a part in wrecking a marriage and "having everything she ever wanted" finally knows what it's like to be in the wronged wife's shoes, and she absolutely hates it. It doesn't inspire empathy and comradeship with Rachel, but reinforces her resentment towards her, because Rachel is someone who disgusts Anna, someone she views as pathetic. So to see herself in a similar role that Rachel was is absolutely horrifying to her and not the way her plans were supposed to go; SHE is the one who gets to play the exciting role of "the other woman", SHE is the one who gets to be the wife of a successful man, SHE is the one who gets his ultimate love and loyalty. And this is what primarily drives her into killing Tom. It's not the fact that he's a murderer, and it's not the fact that she realizes she and Rachel were done wrong by him. It's the fact that Tom lied and cheated on HER and her alone. That he made her feel shoved into a pathetic and rejected role she had previously ascribed to Rachel. So yeah, in spite of Tom wronging all the women in this movie, Anna is not a very nice person. Although the movie has softened her up a bit. However, I suspect Anna would leave town with her child and do her best to shun and forget any reminder of this time of her life, and that definitely includes Rachel. I can only hope her resentment doesn't direct itself to her child.

Sisyphus27 Tom was a violent sociopathic punk so in his mind had was not responsible for Megan's death. No matter what he wasn't at fault for anything.
