@Links Between Drinks I remember watching a video of an undertale fan game that used a very frightening idea. The screen was essentially covered in darkness, you could only see a small area around you. Eventually the player runs across some bodies with some mysterious notes on them, after the player goes off and explores a side room of that area, the bodies are gone. That would be fucking terrifying

How can the atmosphere settle in? If you actually tried to let it set in, the player would realize it's based on a cartoon hedgehog. It's frightening to a kid, sure, but if you let an adult try to soak in the atmosphere, there's a point where they realize how damned silly it is.

I think they did just that with the last Tails bit. Having to go lower and lower, the subtle details of the missing tail and limp, the increasing desperation on his face and body language, it all added up into something genuinely unsettling. (And not just because my childhood was being turned against me.

Well, they are going for the classic .exe 'ooooh blood and voices' thing. But I can argue that that in itself can be made better. Such as cutting out the scary introduction...it was a great animation sprite but they seem to be going at a direction that once the player opens the game, that's when the monster activates or becomes aware, and starts killing which is why they constantly say that you, the player, is at fault for playing and making these characters exist - Yet that also means the monster shouldn't be present at first; It's just woken up. This will give a better outlook of 'lulling you into a sense of safety', and it would make sense if that was the direction they were going. The murder is something forgivable considering this was supposed to be a bloodthirsty monster that woke up all of a sudden, as if it was paused from its goal and the player activating the game brought its goals back in mind, and immediately starts killing. Somewhat like this monster was the same monster from the first Sonic.exe game, and headed for this game to kill, but couldn't do so until a player activates the game. Otherwise, the art, references and programming is absolutely awesome! So many references to the actual Sonic game, such as knowing Tails' real name, and the general vibe of it. The horror element was jumbled, but with a bit of criticism, which hopefully goes right, this could legitimately be a W for old .exe and previous Sonic games.

@stoopid apples That's the thing! On a technical level it is actually really impressive, and all the original sprite work is very well made. I just can't help but think that not only suffer from being a sonic.exe game, but I think it really suffers being a horror game. Develop is talented, he can make a sick fangame or even better, an original game he can potentially make money off of and something people would probably support. However they can not make good horror to save their life, it was more funny then scary or even disturbing.

Everything starts with a girl called Jennifer, she always enjoyed the sonic franchise ever since she was a kid, and loved playing ROM Hacks of his classic games on the internet. Jennifer once had a plan on making her own, however, she didn't have time for that due to college as her top priority, and so asked for help from her friends online. Despite the difficulties in college, progress was going in pretty nicely. Jennifer along with her friends Mike and Charlie were doing a pretty good job as a team, but as time flew by, they slowly stopped talking to each other. A few months have passed, Jennifer was worried about them, but she didn't have the courage to send a message until she gave up and decided to talk to them one more time, and both of them were really happy to see her again. They've spent a whole day talking about the news, what happened to them during these months, etc. Until Mike and Charlie decide to meet up with Jennifer in her house. (During these months, some mysterious people stole Mike and Charlie's personal information and started to threaten them. They wanted them to find a way to make more people know about the entity they cherish, so they made up a plan to use Jennifer as a key for all of this) Jennifer, Mike, and Charlie have been friends for years but never met each other in person. Once they arrive at Jennifer's house, she notices that both of them look pretty nervous, but doesn't care, she's just happy that she can finally see her friends in person. During their talk, Jennifer goes to the kitchen to clean the dishes, while Mike sneaks up on her and hits Jennifer with a hammer, causing a concussion, and to end her suffering, Charlie kills her. Both of them drag her body and use it as a trigger to make a pact with the entity they've heard about. After the entity manifests itself, they make a deal where they manage to get EYX inside the ROM hack from months ago as a form of virus, but as a consequence of talking to this entity, both of them die of a heart attack in the end. Once the ROM got published on the internet, this haunted file has itself disguised under a large scale of different names, but Sonic The Hedgehog Editable ROM is its main name. If you download and play this you will lose access to your browser, and the virus will send your personal information to the group mentioned earlier, making it easier for them to threaten you to love this entity.

My guess is that the reason of the creeps is the game being pirated and back then games could work slightly off when it turns out to be the hacked one. Supposedly.

@Bait Police General Ghost events are poorly made because 99% of the time they don't work the intended way. Let that aside there's only 5-6 ghost events. You get used to it in 5 games at most. After that you don't see anything new to the game except for ghost abilites and that's the ghost finding part not horror. All things aside the developing process seems to be somewhat alright. Just like the developers says phasmophobia isnt a complete game so I don't want to judge it too much but I simply find it awful for the horror element. Luckily they'll work on a "Horror v2" update so I'm kinda excited for that.
