It’s been 10 years since Shohei became a professional baseball player. He never gave up becoming a two-way player but I still can’t believe that an 18-year-old guy decided to do something which was said to be impossible and has accomplished at an elite level. I respect Mr. Kuriyama so much because he believed in Shohei’s talent and gave him the hardest challenge. Usually, the older you become, the more stubborn you become, but he is so progressive. He said he had never doubted Shohei’s possibility for 5 years while people around them had been criticizing them, that’s why Shohei was able to believe in himself. Mr. Kuriyama’s bravery idea and Shohei’s bravery decision changed baseball history. I appreciate their sprit and I’m so grateful to them for giving us dreams.

This is an excellent view of Ohtani's background and development as a two-way player, especially the influence of his manager who encouraged him to try to excel at both pitching and hitting. What we learn most is about Ohtani's dedication to being the best player he can be and possibly the best player ever. That dedication sets him apart from so many other players in addition to his unique talents. So it's the combination of incredible talent, physical gifts unlike anyone else in MLB, and the extraordinary devotion to the constantly improving that make Ohtani a once in a lifetime baseball player. As an athlete, what he's doing is beyond comprehension, given what MLB players say it takes just to do one side of the game at a high level.

Shohei recently temporally returned to Japan; however, we Japanese have seldom or never seen him on any media. Do you have any ideas about what he has been/is doing every day in Japan? ...... he has been/is spending his most time on training/practicing for next season as usual (no changes from his little league time). He is one of giniuses who can continue to make enormous efforts behind the scenes.

There was a tv program here in Japan yesterday that showed a more in-depth reason Ohtani decided to stay in Japan for a bit. Not only did Nippon Ham allow Ohtani to be a two-way player and also promise to let him go to the US when he wanted, but the organization and even some associated with MLB presented Ohtani with statistics of players going from high school to pro ball in the U.S. The success rate from Asia was very low but showed that there was a better chance if he stayed for a bit and then jumped to the MLB. The minor league's gruesome scheduling and traveling by bus were also something on the back of his mind. All in all, I think they took very good care of him in Japan and now the U.S is taking very good care of him as well. Now the fans can witness something rare.

I believe many professional baseball players can be like Shohei Ohtani. The players who are drafted should not be much different from him when they graduate from high school. The problem is how much they can devote themselves to baseball after entering the professional baseball circle. But this seems easy, but it is difficult. Everyone is unable to resist the temptation to devote themselves to anything other than baseball after gaining a little bit of money or honor. Celebrities and super pals come to him. If one has a family, it becomes difficult to devote oneself only to baseball.

Thats because MLB still doesn’t have adequate stats system for a truly full time two way player! So Ohtani has to subject himself to a system that completely ignores this one man doing multiple. This is gravely unjust to judge his performance based on players who only specialize in one category. Still majority doesn’t reach his level in either nor even qualify….truly amazing

私はアメリカの方々が大谷選手のことを “ユニコーン” と呼ぶのが余り好きではありません。もちろん称賛の意味で言っているという事は理解していますが、大谷選手もみんなと同じ普通の人間なのです。もちろん生まれ持った運動神経の能力や才能はあるでしょうが、その能力を最大限引き出す為に、ただひたすらに誰よりも練習して、誰よりも強い意志を持って野球に挑んでいるのだと思います。そしてその能力をつぶさずに引き出してくれた当時の日ハムの首脳陣や栗山監督には本当に感謝しかないです。そして何よりも大谷選手には、私たちに毎日の生きる活力を与えてくれて有難うございますと伝えたいです。

実現不可能て思われていたことを可能にした奇跡的な存在としてそう呼んでるだけで別に大谷本人の努力を軽んじてるから出た呼称じゃないですよ。才能だけでなく努力もしっかり評価されています。実在する選手は実在する生物で喩えるけど、現れるとは思わなかった選手だから実在しない生物に喩えてるただそれだけの話だと思いますけど。怪物だったり化け物だったりそういう比喩が使えなきゃ退屈すぎます。選手を評する時に必ず陰の努力などをつらつら書かないといけないなんて変です。
