このての職人さんでご高齢の女性は初めて見た、何故能面を作る仕事を選んだのかとかこの方の人生をNHKとかで見てみたいｗｗお歯黒って外国人に伝わるのかな？古くは1000年以上前から日本にあり、主には美容目的で用いており、またその染料によって口腔内の虫歯や歯周病の予防にも役に立った。その後、江戸時代には庶民の間で既婚女性がお歯黒をするようになり、引眉（眉毛の大部分を剃ったり抜いたりする行為）とセットでやる様になる。黒という色は不変なので、「貞女二夫に見えず」（貞操を守り、夫と離別や死別をしても再婚をしないという誓いの意味）という貞操のしるしとして重用するようになる。

Not only does this video showcase some amazing craftsmanship, but it also taught me something new being ohaguro. I'd never heard of this practice before, and it shows me just how much there still is to learn in this world. 15:10、すごいの一言です。鏡に映っているのは老成した女性職人ではなく、うら若い高貴な女性。これが能面の持つ力だと映像越しでも伝わります。ただ顔を隠すための仮面ではなく、次元を超えた別の存在になるための面。彩色も繊細で陰影のニュアンスが絶妙。これがまた現代の流行りの化粧法にも通じていて、なおのこと若く美しく見えます。彩色をする手つきは人に化粧を施すそれと同じように優しい。直方体のヒノキの中に眠る美しく高貴な女性をこの世に目覚めさせる、素晴らしい職人です。

The thuth is no one knows exactly why teeth was had to be blackened. Some say, it's a buddhist tradition, some - because of white makeup, teeth stood out as yellowish, some say that black teeth simply was considered beautiful at the time. What is known, howewer, that ohaguro was initially worn by both men and women, but males gradually dropped that practice in Muromachi period and only women would blacken their teeth untill the beginning of 20th century.

They don't look realistic but rather creepy to me. I know it's a traditional artform, but they need better models... Specifically, they need to redo the mouth, as the teeth look downright weird. Had they carved the the mask with its mouth closed, it would have been much better.

Amazing work. As I was watching, I kept thinking this was a master for a mold for cast masks, but no. This woman make one-offs. Wow. I hope when her hands get too tired, she has those who will pass on the tradition or someone shows her 3D modeling and printing if she still wants to create masks. Her painting skills are also great!

I saw this while I had some down time at my day job and it filled me with such strong emotion. I'm a wooden puppet maker looking to go full time and this video told me that I need to retire from the 9-5 model and make my living as an artist. I know there are challenges that come with this but I've learned throughout my life that when something like this enters my mind and stirs up such emotion that I just have to find a way to do it no matter the odds.

Noh masks are some of my favorite pieces of art. Not just the details that explain the characters, but also how the actors use different angles, tilting their heads one way or another to convey so many expressions with the masks. Absolutely something to see in person if one gets the chance. I'm hoping one day I'll get to experience it.
