You know when you're banning a Dolly Parton song, you know you should really step back and take a look at your priorities and what you're doing as school staff. Rainbows have been around forever anyways, a symbol of God's covenant with humanity. But of course, that would require... gasp... actually reading the Bible. And we know how hard THAT is.

@Princess Tiarra Yes, I remember. It was uphill, both coming and going, in deep snow and sub-zero temps... Even in September and May! Or at least that's what it seemed like. Also, 20 hour school days, starting at 8am, and ending at 3pm. Except for the backpacks which only a healthy mule should carry, the kids have it so easy these days (not). It's a nightmare, and trying to explain it to our children and make them feel safe is also way beyond what should be going on. Somehow this has got to stop.

@Nadine pals my opinion, keeps child home the day the movie is being shown. Another option, the child is placed in another classroom or library (with fun activities or book) for the duration of the movie with supervision. Yes, reinstate the movie, it should never have been pulled.

You don't resolve a line parental complaint about a movie by scrapping the movie. You resolve it by removing the student from the room and assign some alternate activity. Like reading a banned book, for example.

The Rainbow Connection is probably my favourite song ever composed. These people are insane. These songs have some of the most benign and positive lyrics ever put to paper. The world is falling to pieces and their top priority is preventing kids from hearing how good it feels to be yourself and love others. My mom was super strict, and her religion banned tons of stuff. When my class did anything not approved by the church, I simply went to the nurse's office. I ended up helping out so much, I considered a career as a nurse. (I didn't, but my brother did.) Never ONCE did my mother EVER think that her beliefs warranted stripping other children of the right to do something.

@Rhov Anion I respect that, as long as a parent exercises censorship only over their own kids I don't mind, might suck for their kids but it's more understandable than restricting a whole group of kids. My mom was an 80's goth animal rights activist, vegetarian and atheist so I was lucky enough to not really have movies or shows restricted besides obviously explicit stuff. And books were given even more freedom since my mom figured as long as I was reading I was fine, and I turned out alright, and was pretty mature for my age since I was able to consume content other than strictly kids shows.

My mother restricted metal and hard rock music, movies or TV shows with magic (she would have thought your mother was satanic... ah the 80s) and while she at first allowed me to read anything I wanted, my older sister began to snitch on me when I bought any books that she felt were "dirty." I remember having to hid "Tiger Eyes" behind my bookshelf because my sister threatened to burn it due to a "sex scene." The girl and her boyfriend makeout. That's it. I don't remember that but they've been on a crusade against music for a long time. They said Christian rock was also from the devil, which is thinly veiled racism stemming from colonial slave owners being afraid of African rhythms that gave birth to rock and roll. Yeah, when I worked in a small Library I had the children create a giant rainbow on the wall. The woman that owned a shop across the way and was on the Friends board said I should take it down immediately because it was a gay symbol. When Congress asked for testimony, Pence was part of the executive branch, when the DOJ asks for his testimony, he's part of the legislative branch. Some lawyer need to present to a judge the argument that Pence is lying to at least one of these courts by offering contradictory statements.

I was a member of an underprivileged summer program as a kid, one of the staff members, an adult, sneered at me every time he saw me and to this day I'm not 100% sure why. One of my teachers at school, who never fully directed the computer class she was teaching, always complimented me on how well I used my words. She always sounded so surprised. My school still had a lot of kids bussed in from tougher neighborhoods. Our school was predominantly white. Pretty sure, based on my caramel latte skin tone, she was surprised I didn't sound like Bon qui qui from Mad Tv. Yeah, I'm still mad as an adult. They let the math teacher play favorites with sports fans, too. She took "pride" in being the "toughest teacher" when her style included shaming test scores in front of the entire class. Attendance too. When I looked her up to see if by some miracle she'd been fired, my heart broke because she now has administrative power at that school. The local school board is made up of local parents that went to school together. Had babies at the same time as their best friends so they could schedule playdates and school calendars according to their and only their "Angels." Their narc everyone else out, butt into personal matters by signing up for "peer mediation", cry and throw tantrums when they're held to the same rules "Angels." You know who ELSE was a "Beautiful Angel" and the "Apple of Father's eye" up there in "Paradise?" Take an hour to think before you answer. Relax, you can find "Grace for sale" in this country. No need to do the "Time Warp." Random Trivia: In the Chinese zodiac January 1989 was still the year of the Dragon. It's so weird to me that a country would vote for and adopt laws, but not make of the running costs of that law part of the law itself. If a majority votes for program X, wouldn't it be logical to say "Congress voted in favor for X, running X costs amount Y, so amount Y will be allocated". Read the Deficit Myth. Govt debt by currency issuers (federal govt) is actually investment in the country. And currency issuers cannot default or go bankrupt unless they choose to do so. The only constraint is resources (natural, labour, etc).

The government began in debt, due to the Revolutionary War, and every economic upheaval, such as the Depression, Viet Nam War, Recession, 2008 crash, and Pandemic increased the debt, just like an individual who has a mortgage, makes car payments, owes student loans, and uses credit cards to pay them. As long as US assets exceed our debt, we're still solvent, and the US has plenty of collateral. Don't fall for the GQP mindtwist. Their finances are never in order, and Dems always get more for the buck.

My kids go the school where the one parent complained about the Ruby Bridges movie. The school sent a permission slip home like they do for other movies. This parent opted their kid out of the movie. Not sure why they went and complained on behalf of all other parents and students after they were given a choice and made it. Perhaps because they wanted attention? If that was the goal, mission accomplished. One individual parent that doesn’t represent the school made the national news and the late show.

@Harrison Tackett I think they do this because the movie is rated PG. I’m not 100% on that - just a guess. My kids are able to watch G rated movies without permission. But I take your point - as parents we need to rely on educators’ expertise. There are great teachers at this school. It just really sucks that politics have taken over the school board and that individual parents with an axe to grind can run a community through the mud like this.
