It's the mother of all dystopias! Long before YA dystopia rose to power, before the age of Young Attractive Heroes who Rebel Against The State and Also Find Love, there was just Winston Smith - a middle-aged man in poor health who Rebelled Against The State and Also Found Love. It just ended much less prettily for him.

1984 codified most of the modern dystopia tropes - absolute control of the media, black-bagging people who spoke out, and a lot of popular terms like "doublethink", "big brother", and "thought police". Unfortunately, a lot of those terms got stripped of context and thrown around for the sake of Extra Edge, and as a result they get used a little haphazardly. And there's nothing Red hates more than misused terminology, so here's the video outlining the ORIGINAL meaning of 1984!

0:54 hitler and Stalin were far from opposite ends of the political spectrum both were socialist one believed in socialism based on race and other based on class the nazi economy was government operated and controlled far from being far right which would mean extreme capitalism.

Fun fact, the guy portraying Winston Smith is the late Sir John Hurt, who also played the guy who got chestbursted in the first Alien movie, Doctor Who, and the fascist dictator in V for Vendetta. So he played both a dystopian protagonist and a dystopian villain.

Every video of yours I watch led me to believe you were an Orwellian useful idiot. This video proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt. Ironic huh. You engaging in double think and rewriting history through this video. You uplifted socialism and communism while putting socialism in the right wing with the nazis. Your the type of person who currently wants the genocide of people who think differently with a million excuses as to why it's good simultaneously you decry historical genocide that are exactly the same. Use your brain for once you might actually find how far from decency you are.

One aspect of the book that I never see people really talk about is that, had the party not placed all those fake revolutionaries and spies in his path, Winston would never have rebelled by himself. He says multiple times that he likes his job, that he enjoys completing the tasks he's given, that he finds comfort in having a place in the world - it's only when party agents essentially lead him by the hand that he becomes "openly" rebellious, and is then punished for it. Such a great book.

I disagree with the interpretation that 1984 is about Stalin or Hitler (animal farm definetly is tho). Considering Orwell's life, he was an employee for the BBC, spending much of the war spouting radio propaganda which he didn't believe in in the slightest but being scared of being considered a traitor. As far as he knew when he wrote 1984, many governments hated him and censured him because of his socialist ideas. Especially things like the protagonist working for the government feels more like Orwell drawing parallels with himself than anything else.

Modern "thought policing" is indeed NOT just people disagreeing with you or calling you a jerk. It's when people fear disproportionate reprisal (such as losing their job or suffering violence) for saying the wrong opinions, and thus self-censor.

George Orwell’s last warning : “There will be no loyalty except loyalty to the Party. But always there will be the intoxication of power. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who’s helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face, forever. The moral to be drawn from this dangerous nightmare situation is a simple one: don’t let it happen. It depends on you.”

So I hate 1984, not because of the dystopia, but its pretentious attitude about itself while being absolutely contrived. If double think is absolutely impossible to beat, why can't it be applied against Oceania? Except Orwell doesn't want to write about that, if there was LBJ figure who goes against the system using its own tools for himself. The book presents itself as this end all be all, though in truth it's a singular facet of an idea that refuses to explore the greater depths involved. Which makes it an interesting novel, though not particularly deep, and especially not profound. One thing that always fascinated me was how Orwell was once a student of Huxley, and that 1984 was written after A Brave New World. Yet in spite of all that Orwell had before him to make a great novel, he failed to be better than his teacher. As A Brave New World is a far superior novel, and if I going to be honest, a more accurate depiction of a stable dystopia.
Reese Hendricksen

I guess some analysts say that the appendix implies that eventually, the party gets overthrown. The debate, as I understand it, comes down to whether one thinks that's possible, with the power the party has. Personally, I think the greatest implication of the appendix being written after the party's destruction is that Winston's dream of a secret society of rebels and a mostly-complacent populace is wrong. A few brave rebels don't turn a social order on its head. That's a process everyone in that society contributes to. The only complacency comes from honestly thinking that progress can come from any individual actions.

I have read and heard about how big government is bad, and I do agree. But how come you never hear about how corporations are too big and powerful, and are doing the very thing that big government does? When corporations are the government, then that is fascism and the fact that we don't talk about it is what normalised fascism now
Krankar Volund
Krankar Volund ヶ月 前
I mean, corporations are all, without exception, non-democratic. So of course big corporations means no democracy, you don't vote for the CEO, and if the CEO control also your town... that's bad :p You like payed holidays, weekends and limitation of working time? That's regulations forced on corporations by the government (most often, forced on the government by unions or social movements). If we reduce government what autjority will prevent corporations to reinstate child labor exactly? ^^'

You know Socialism and Fascism are both far Left concepts, right? The far Right is anarchy, due to the fact The Left is big government and The Right is small government. It is basic logic.
Socialism is when the government does stuff, and when the government does a lot of stuff, it's COMMUNISM

Tbh, in a way you can admire the political party leader AKA, the dictator in a strange way, It's not very easy to control an entire country and it's citizens, and the idea to instead SPY on the rebels before taking them away so they can lead you to more rebels is a good idea. The whole Propaganda movement is done so well and Red explains it amazingly. I've done some research and Winston was 39 in the book and his mother seemed around 35. Meaning the party must've been around for at least 86-89 years. I'm adding a few years since I doubt the country started off as a dystopian. The story and the movie is just really good, along with the explanation.
