The Suicide Squad! The new one! 2021 one! Some people liked it more than the David Ayer version, I personally think it lacks a lot of Jared Leto and Will Smith but that's just me! Here's everything right with The Suicide Squad!

I think Cena's wrestling history is what gave him the improv ability. In pro wrestling they have the plot points but its up to the wrestlers to get there.

@Tyrant-Den true. But Hogan probably had a say in creative to keep his perfect character spic and span. Plus Hogan never did a character that was even interesting or fun as Peacemaker is.

Eh, if that was all it took: the Hulk Hogan movies would have been a lot better.

@Boyan Kovachev well Cena is one of the few exceptions who could improvise with ease because he's a top guy. So he could say some crazy shit and get away with it.

@gehrig002 Well, kinda. On both. Like, about the promos, for most people, I agree absolutely. There are few that have a free reign. Pun kinda intended. For the matches, it's on the wrestlers. Some people like to have all of their matches planned. Like Jake the Snake did. But, you are mainly right and I'm definitely not arguing with you, but agreeing. One love ❤️

I would have given a win for Harley yelling "NO" when polka dot man threw dots at the guards and set off a bomb. I thought it was genius because she's always treated like a bimbo blonde, even in that very scene, but she is a very intelligent trained psychiatrist, and given the fact that she often, if not always, worked with criminals, she would know how easily some explosives can be triggered

@Bloody Bee it’s definitely a feminist movie although I have no idea what people mean when they say “sjw movie.” If they mean progressive, then sure (although I’d say that’s more of a good thing then a bad thing). Annoying and Preachy? I wouldn’t say so. It’s a really fun and weird movie that has a pretty strong message but not one that felt hamfisted. I love the humor and the action, and the style and the performances in Birds of Prey. I definitely wouldn’t call the characters in that movie OP (especially since only one of them has powers and it’s only used once at the end of the movie and knocks her out) and they are all definitely very capable considering their backgrounds (ex-girlfriend of the joker, trained vengeful assassin, ex-cop, and ex-mafia boss worker) but I wouldn’t call them invulnerable. My only complaints I’d say is that sometimes the violence can be a little overkill, the side characters aren’t as well-developed as Harley Quinn and the villain (Black Mask played by Ewan McGregor), and a good chunk of the first half of the movie takes place out of order for some weird reason. But other than those minor complaints (and if you don’t mind the occasional f-bomb and weird moments), then I’d say ignore what you’ve heard about it and give it a try. It’s not for everyone, but I definitely had a good time with it. Solid 8/10 Edit: Although if you’re a minor, then maybe hold off on watching it depending on how old you are and how well you can handle r-rated stuff. Me and my little brothers saw it when it came out back in 2020 and we were 16, 13, and 11 respectively at the time and we all enjoyed it. But again, it just depends on how well you can handle r-rated stuff (mainly violence… cartoonishly brutal violence).

@Zivo fair point, but (and I hate to mention the original) in the first movie we saw her psychoanalize the original suicide squad to get a leg up on them when she was upset. Her being able to connect the dots during battle isn't that far fetched imo

@Your Local Mad Hatter I actually haven't seen birds of prey. A lot of people say it's an sjw/feminist movie that makes the female characters useless in one scene and OP in the next. I've noticed that DC does really well when two things happen: 1. It's rated R 2. The studio doesn't touch anything and lets the director, direct Edit: I turned off notifs for likes and comments when this had around 50 likes... The fuck happened 😂 This was a throwaway comment that I forgot about. I agree that The Dark Knight and Shazam etc are great, truly, and The Batman showed that it doesn't need to be rated R to properly show the depravity of Gotham. Have a good day

@Buzzie Buzz it either needs to be a R18, an action comedy, or a R18 action comedy. Going PG13 Action doesn't work because having 2 people with world breaking power punching eachother and doing practically nothing isn't fun. Action comedy works because it isn't taken too seriously, and adding R17 to that just gets you the suicide squad, a great film.

On the thing with the birds - I think there's a big theme of freedom throughout the movie. Starro never hurt anyone until his freedom was taken away, Ratcatcher 2 was unjustifiably incarcerated, Flagg's been locked into running these suicide missions despite being a pretty exemplary soldier, Polka Dot Man is never free from his mother's presence, Bloodsport is only doing this to free his daughter, Harley was a functioning member of society until her freedom was taken away by an abusive relationship... the use of "Hey" (specifically the bit where Francis and Kim scream "chained!") as they walk towards almost certain death really drove this home for me - the Squad are chained, they don't have the freedom to not risk their lives for a government that has failed them. I think the birds that show up throughout illustrate regular people, rather than the Squad who are likened to rats. Some of the birds are admired by the characters in the movie, some are killed by them, some feed on their deaths, some are allowed to stay completely oblivious to what's going on Or maybe the birds are just there to illustrate what the Squad want to be? Whatever the case I think it's related to freedom

I like that take, that the birds represent freedom. To add to that, I think the bird murder at the beginning was a result Michael Rooker’s character’s jealousy for the bird, which was free - unlike him.

I still love how so many people were surprised at John Cena's acting ability, especially after Dwayne Johnson got popular. I know wrestling gets a bad rap, but as silly as it can be sometimes it's still acting. And so much of it is improvised, you can't do well in that kind of field without a lot of talent. I'm not even a fan of wrestling in general, but there are way too many people who don't realize that the "big dumb muscle guy" thing is often just as much a part of the act as the hammy acting itself.

Starro is interesting. In most interactions of starro, he was a peaceful alien turned starfish monster and is known as “Starro the Conqueror” for making a legion from the people he starfishes. If he wasn’t evil, he was Batman’s pet to use as a sidekick who went by “Starro in a jar” or “jarro” This iteration though he was just a cosmic entity who wanted to float peacefully in space, no intent of harming anyone until he was essentially spacenabbed and tortured. Poor fellow

Two things I wanna throw in (to an already brilliant video, so props to you Lee!): 17:48: Not only does Bloodsport shoot exactly through Peacemaker’s bullet, he also blows his gun apart! Fun detail for someone who’s clearly that good a shot. Also, more of a general point, but I love how less serious Rick Flag is immediately in this. Instead of his weird standoffish demeanour with the Squad in the 2016 version (which does make sense, esp if that’s their first outing and this is a few years into it all), he’s much more welcoming and treats them humanely; shaking Savant’s hand, asking what name he prefers, drinking with Bloodsport and being confused but also happy to see him instead of the usual standoffish relationship you’d expect. It makes him a much more well-rounded character and makes his death that much more heartbreaking, IMO.

Something I really appreciated about this movie is its uses of underknown characters, like Ratcatcher (2), Polka Dot Man, Bloodsport, Weasel, Mongal, etc., and making them actual genuinely well written characters, or comic relief. As a fan of the lesser known villains, like Ratcatcher and Polka Dot Man, it was extremely validating to see them be actual important characters and contribute to the plot. Bringing back Flag, Harley, Waller, and Boomerang (even though he died) was a nice way of sort of somewhat connecting it to the previous movie, but bringing any more returning characters would have just made it feel more of the same. I remain adamant that there is no character that is impossible to write, it just takes the right actor, writer, and director

It's so nice to hear someone break down the Harley monologue. This movie actually made me tear up a few times: Harley's speech and acknowledgement not only of her own mistakes/sins, but her defining of her own morality. There is always just something off about any portraysl of Harley and I love where the modern versions are taking her development. The other moments that got me were Rat catcher's Burdens scene and of course "I was happy...staring at the stars." How dare you make me mourn a hive mind alien creature, Gunn?! How dare you do it twice! Such a powerful line from Starro, esp in a film overflowing with American nationalism. (it's no coincidence Starro said this line via the body of the Banana Republic General, who was also mislead and doomed from the start). That line becomes even heavier once you watch Peacemaker and learn about the butterflies.

Ratcatcher 2 was just a beautiful addition to the movie. Every comic book character is exceptionally well thought out and characterized, no matter how small they were in that comic. Someone had to think of them, give them a name and a backstory, write their lines, go over painstaking story boards, go over line-work and colours with an artist, weave them into a plot with other characters and so much more to incorporate them into a comic. Sometimes you can just ad lib in movies and that spontaneity is an art form on its own but sometimes I forget how much effort and time goes into comic books because you can flip through them so fast. You can really see it in this movie with Ratcatcher 2 and even Pokeadot man. They have such small parts in the movie but they have a back-round just as thought out and original and interesting as the 'main' characters. I really love how Gunn highlighted everyones story, even if it was quick. Ratcatcher 2 was probably my favourite secondary character (ba dum chhhh) ever in a comic book movie at least. Beautifully played, short but exceptionally meaningful lines and I was crossing my fingers hoping they would take a risk and that she would get a tv show actually. Personally i'd be more excited about that vs Peacemaker but I understand John Cena already has an audience and he did play the character pretty well.

With the "bird" thing...I think it's a motif surrounding empathy, maybe? The characters we're meant to like treat them with kindness while the ones we're supposed to hate are cruel to them. It's generally all animals in the film but the birds are definitely the most recognisable, probably to play with the idea of caged/free birds, like the main characters. It also helps build up the payoff of Starro just being another caged victim, just like the team.

Legitimately one of my favorite movies. (Not my favorite, and not even my second favorite... maybe in my top 5 though.) James Gunn is a genius for the mixture of the superhero genre, comedy, tragedy, and legitimately touching character stories, all while subverting one expectation and trope after another, AND using the characters to the best of their abilities. This would have been an amazing movie even without it, but getting that one sequence of Birds of Prey style Harley-vision only added to the epic feeling. We actually got to see things from every character's point of view (well, the ones who lasted 15 minutes at least), and to manage that in an ensemble movie without it feeling rushed or crowded is just... *mwah* perfection.

True, but based on the early trailers for Suicide Squad, I'm not sure the movie was trying to go for showing the heart of the characters (they are violent criminals, after all). Or maybe it was. Honestly I think a win should've been given for the subtle touch that after mourning Polka-Dot Man, Ratcatcher 2 carries that piece of his costume all the way onto the transport at the end as a sign he'll be remembered. I'd love if she shows up again later having sewn it into her costume somewhere.

“Peacemaker what a Joke.” You could see and even feel the heartbreak on John Cena’s face hearing that, it almost makes you wonder if he was hoping Bloodsport would catch him trying to kill Flagg/Ratchatcher. Because Peacemaker knows Bloodsport is the only one who can stop him in the group.

I think my favorite aspect of Starro is that The Thinker gave him his name. It's almost a hint for Starro's devastating final line. Starro in this movie was not a conqueror. He was just happy to exist and float endlessly through space. When he came to Earth against his will, it's The Thinker that calls him a conqueror which makes everyone assume he's a horrid monster bent on world domination. What a solid twist to the character and another amazing subversion from Mr. James Fucking Gunn

Y'know, I didn't catch that on my first viewing, but it totally makes sense! Perfectly ties into the movie's core themes of world powers callously meddling in the affairs of other nations. Heh, I wonder if Amanda Waller ordering the Suicide Squad to back down after Starro escapes is an intentional parallel to the USA's recent foreign policies? They actively created a monster by meddling in this nation's affairs for their own political gain, then when the monster gets loose and starts killing people, they say "not our problem!" and bail out. That's a relatively solid parallel to the Taliban, if you want to look at it that way. Although in the USA's defence they didn't _immediately_ bail out, and the problems they created weren't as easy to fix as Starro, but they still gave up when it started getting tough.

Two points I wanted to make that just elevate this movie even more for me 1)When Bloodsport, Peacemaker, and Flag are held captive in the van all three of them at the exact same time do pretty much exactly the same thing just in slightly different ways as a joke on how these three characters have functionally the same abilities but just come in different flavors 2) The thing that really brings this to a god-tier movie for me is just how they have the perfect theme for a movie about "these guys are villains so they're expendable" presented in a kinda perfect metaphor. The life lesson Taika Waititi Ratcatcher delivers near the end is just that even the lowliest things on Earth have a purpose and are worth as much as anything else. Its a perfect deconstruction of the thing the Suicide Squad was built on, these characters being expendable bc they're villains. Bc they still have feelings and desires and are people, even if they've done some bad stuff and have been in jail for a while. It's just the perfect movie is what I'm saying

I love the Tarantino-esque feel of this movie. It feels like some Spaghetti-Vietnam-War movie from like 1978. It’s almost a combination of Inglorious Basterds, The Inglorious Bastards, and the 2016 Suicide Squad, as well as that Guardians of the Galaxy wit that the 2016 Suicide Squad seemingly tried to emulate. This is the exact kind of movie that the Suicide Squad were supposed to make.

@Jason Blalock - As long as they keep not wasting him in DC movies/shows, I'll be happy. He was great as Calendar Man in *The Long Halloween* parts1&2 , and as Dwight Pollard in *Gotham* (the second time he played a "Joker" henchman) and as Abra Kadabra in *The Flash* ... he plays a great "unconventional" villain. I really love this guy's story, when he was auditioning for *The Dark Knight* he was completely broke, didn't have a job, was living in his car and was addicted to heroin... that was his first movie and a small role, but he gave such a memorable performance that it opened a lot of doors for him and he got his life back on tracks. When he was brought back almost 10 years later for *Gotham* season 3, especially as another "Mr J" goon, I was so happy; I had never felt happy _"for"_ an actor before, it's hard to explain... But him crediting Batman for saving his life and wanting to have a "legacy" role in the show, (like how Paul Reubens came back to play the Penguin's father again, so many years after *Batman Returns* ) that was really heart-warming for a DC nerd like me... I really loved that show for these castings. And then he stuck around DC and got more and more roles, playing several other DC rogues, I sure hope he'll keep doing just that. I keep hoping he'll show up as a villain in *Doom Patrol* , *Titans* or *Stargirl* one day...

I see the final message as an optimistic take on the whole concept of the Suicide Squad. Like, up to now, we see the concept of the Squad as “We’re nothing more than worthless pawns, they’ll throw us to the wolves and just have to deal with it.” With this film, this gets twisted into “No matter what we’ve done or how worthless we feel in the grand scheme of things, we all have a part to play.”

One of the other Nanaue bits that I didn't notice the first time around was when he was stuck in the van while the others were in the bar. They were drinking and bonding, and he was in the van, wiping his tears, and that was just such a great little moment. Another one is when Bloodsport is describing what his father did to him. We were introduced to Peacemaker being a bit of a joke and copy of him, but the fact that he nods along to Bloodsport's story shows another side that's relatable between both of them. Fantastic little bit.
A random Person
A random Person 5 ヶ月 前
(spoiler warning for Peacemaker show, seriously check it out if you can) Peacemaker nodding along to Bloodsport's story is something that makes what we see in the show even better, as a lot of what the show does is take the evil douche Captain America that was Peacemaker in the suicide squad movie and start to actually expand upon that little bit of connection until you realize that Peacemaker was nodding along because his dad also subjected him to horrible torture to try to make him a more effective killer.

I saw some deleted scenes revolving around Nanaue afterwards which see him following children and playing with them, that also leads to Thinker trying to manipulate Polka-dot Man into letting him go but he shoots him in the ear instead which gives us a reason why Thinker suddenly has a bandage on his ear in the next scene. I think both of those scenes should have been kept in.

I was watching a reaction where they mentioned that Starro is definitely weaker here than in the origin comic. But considering the Suicide Squad's mission, the Justice League would have eventually had to fight Starro and by that point, they WOULD probably have become that strong. And I think that's interesting. It's almost like this movie cockblocks that timeline.
