Thanks to Drunner64 for requesting this video!

Spain's most famous eccentric takes center stage in a comedy that SORT of manages to hold up in spite of the majority of its humor amounting to pop-culture references that make NO sense in our current cultural climate. Also this book is about 150% longer than it needs to be, and that's not even touching on the sequel!

Asking for someone to cover Don Quixote as a book is the literary equivalent of asking a musician to play Stairway to Heaven.

The Spanish were conquered by the Moors for 500 years, but one mention of the enchanted Moors and it's racism. I have no doubt that future humans will find the 21st century to be the most absurd.

22:53 the framing device is a hilarious joke. See in chapter 8 (of 32), we earn that are wonder (and presumed Christian author) just stoped having any more writings about don quixote. However there is an Arabic/moorish translation available and Cervantes warns that they are known to leave things out (because stopping at 8 chapters and leaving 24 more unwritten isn’t leaving things out?)

We were forced to read a few chapters of the original version for 2 months, which was hell cause it was ORIGINAL VERSION with grammar that was close to indecipherable. Wish I could've found this sooner cause I spent 2 months cursing Cervantes for writing it

There’s an interesting short story by Jorge Luis Borges called “Pierre Ménard, author of the Quixote”. It imagines a 20th century French symbolist who sat down to write Don Quixote, word for word, without copying the original. He dies before completing it, but the narrator then argues that what Pierre Ménard did write of his Don Quixote is actually better then Cervantes’, despite having all the same words in the same order. He then encourages us to read all books as if they were written by different authors or at different times in order to appreciate them from all angles. I guess what I’m saying is that I like the modern perspective of Don Quixote, and that’s how I’ll read it. In my ‘headcanon,’ that’s what the author intended.

Here's what I would love: a Don Quixote movie where Don Quixote talks to the audience but the rest of the characters just think he's crazy. Like Don Quixote would be in the middle of a monologue and then the camera would switch to another character watching him and wondering who he's talking to

this novel is long as fuck and full of a heck of a lot of characters, so many that red couldn't mention some of the most importants, like the bachellor Carrasco, better known as "the knight of mirrors and the forest" a long lasting friend of Don Quixote who, in order to convince him to go back to his home, disguises himself as a knight and challenge him to a joust and lost. Latter in the novel, he challenge him again, this time with a better shinnier piece of armor, presenting himself as the knight of the white moon who proceed to kick don Quixote's ass and tell him to "go home already"

As an spanish reader, don quixote is one of my favourites classic books, especially the one written in the original style of the author (since its was written long time ago the spanish he wrote was a bit diferent from the modern spanish, so it needs a bit of adaptation)

2005 is a bit much, Wasn't the "The Handmaid's Tale" that I hear feminists talk about written in the 80s? Now a book from 400 years ago? Ya, that's surprising especially considering how that same book is racist and pro-slavery.

Fun fact: one of the books the priest saves is "La Araucana", an epic tale about the spanish conquest of South America that both the priest and the real author celebrates as a realistic display of chivalry able to compete against other classical works, as both sides of the conflict are represented with equal respect. Even when the story is written during the time of colonization and by someone who is in the colonizers side of the story, the author makes it a point to show the native people, the Mapuche, as being just as honorable as Spanish companions, instead of demonizing those who Spain were trying to defeat he celebrates their achievements even as they lose he paints it as a glorious sacrifice for the well being of their people. Anyway I hope someday Red will make a video about it or people go and read it more, or if you find that reading a whole book is too boring you could check out some of the protagonist stories, like Galvarino, who got both hands chopped off as punishment, and instead of giving up he just tied down two knives to his arms and kept fighting, and when he was condemned to death by hanging he said his only regret was that he was not able to tear them to pieces with his teeth right there.

Bravely bold Quixote rode forth from Camelot. He was not afraid to die, oh brave Quixote. He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways. Brave, brave, brave, brave Quixote. He was not in the least bit scared to be mashed into a pulp, or to have his eyes gouged out and his elbows broken, to have his kneecaps split and his body burned away, and his limbs all hacked and mangled, brave Quixote.

Don Quixote has also become a symbol of perseverance: As in keeping on going knowing that there will be a thousand disasters for every victory. Plus I'm writing a story set in the far future about a man who is, apparently , the last human being in existence after a brutal interstellar war. He calls himself Don Cue.

Don Quixote is not just a stupid fan of chivalresque novels, he's much deeper than that. Don Quixote is a symbol of pure idealism facing reality, even though his attempts are awkward, silly and futile(and he just can't realize it till the end) he can't stop himself from dreams of nobility, greatness and glory. Conflict between his nature and reality causing that all the attempts are tilting at windmills is awareness of extreme which every dreamer risking to sink into
