Bobby Fischer's Secret Online Match vs Nigel Short in 2000

#agadmator The story is that Bobby Fischer sometimes logs on to the Internet Chess Club (ICC) as a guest and plays an incredible series of blitz games against random opponents. The pattern is always the same: "Fischer", who does not have an ICC handle, will make contact either directly or through a third person and then play a series of very fast blitz games ("bullet chess"), using preposterous openings and whipping the living daylights out of his opponents. They are sworn to secrecy, so the games are seldom published. Only the stories of the apparition, of the bone-chilling encounter with the ephemeral chess legend remains.

Not only is it highly improbable that Fischer could be this good at age 58 after barely playing any chess after his world championship, if you look at these games and run some of the positions through chess engines of the day, you’ll find that a vast majority of the moves “Fischer” supposedly played, aside from the openings, were engine suggested. There is no way it was Fischer; just a troll who happened to own a powerful computer that was able to trick some gullible players.

on mate in 5, you missed a move after Rh1+, black's knight has a move, then it's RxN ++. And, I'm convinced that Short was playing against Fischer.

The style, the dominance, the being unorthodox and seemingly reckless. The fact that black had a winning position and still couldn't win. Every move including giving up his queen all seemed like a calculation and lure into his 20-25 move trap. This game was an abstract masterpiece. Well down by Bobby Fischer❤

This is definitely a a demonstration of pure genius the fact that its unorthodox for the standard definition of unorthodox meaning that It took a special type of individual to come out with that type ed of opening I do believe that I TV was Bobby Fischer simply because he literally experimented ed noted with every other unorthodox style it would only make sense that at this particular moment in his life he would have been doing the most ridiculously unorthodox openings that it would make a regular unorthodox opening be considered a somewhat standard. Amazing absolutely beautiful game

@ByRTD yO 1. firstly someone posted a link below to press conference in iceland where fischer himself said it was not him and that it was ridiculous to think it was. 2. if you know anything about chess whatsoever (you clearly do not) you would see that the moves are clearly computer/CPU moves and not human moves. And not in that praising way "hurr durr Fischer wasn't human!" personally I consider fischer maybe the best ever so it's not like I'm even a hater of him, but the moves are clearly CPU moves. I played a lot of chess in my younger years but eventually stopped because I hated the repetitiveness. E2 to E4, Knight to F3, the other knight comes out or bishop to c4 etc.. while the opponent just reacts accordingly that usually ended up like a mirrored board and traffic jams worse than rush hour. I wanted to be unorthodox but didn't think it was competitive to do so. Mr. Fischer proved it was possible and that all this repetitive memorizing theory wasn't needed to win at the highest level. Mr. Fischer will always be the greatest player to me and because of this particular game, I may get back into it.

Were engines that good in 2000? In-fact find the best engine of the time then put the moves in and see what happens.
hasamoker hasamoker
Back in 2000/01, the strongest engine was "Deep Blue" with an estimated elo of 2850. Some people claim that in this game, it was an engine user using "Blitz Tiger", which I personally doubt since it was rated only 2700. In contrast: Fischer at his peak had a rating of >2900, plus there is the elo-inflation...

Yes. I like Fisher's game and I want to believe that it was superGM Fisher, but.... When you remove the impossible, all ever remain, how it incledible, is the true. Sherlock Holmes said this. So, someone beat Nigel 8-0 in Blitz with handicape. But Nigel is very strong GM, more stronger that Spassky in 1992. Was Fisher win him 10-0? Without handicape? No, that was 10-5 wins , and something draw. Also that was not Kasparov (12,5-7,5) and no human. But it was still Fischer: he gave himself away as an answer to a question that only he could know. Next: In a 2005 interview, for fear of being exposed as a cheater, Fisher said: It wasn't me. But this is such an opportunity to prove to everyone that he, Fischer, is a super GM and really world champion, as he told everyone. And that the world has lost a lot from his departure So, no man could beat Nigel 8-0. It was engine, "Blitz Tiger", for example. Fischer had money for better equipment and software. And he gave himself away with an answer that only he knew Sorry for not the best language, I'm from Russia.

@Slance I can't verify it was this program, but according to the wiki it sounds accurate to this game. "Chess Tiger is designed to be particularly aggressive in its style of play.[7] While most chess engines tend to avoid gambits and sacrifices Chess Tiger actually prefers them.[8] Chess Tiger calculates very quickly even in relatively weak hardware environments which implies that the evaluation function is fairly 'light' and that therefore the balance between speed and positional understanding is weighted in favour of the former.[9]" I honestly want to believe this was Fischer, but it's really not likely when you think about it. I mean, Fischer wouldn't respond with just a year if he was asked if he knew a guy. He wouldn't want anyone to know it was him.

Obviously someone using a very strong chess engine maybe the strongest chess engine for the day against one of the best players in the world at that time. I doubt even Kasparov could have beaten Short 8-0 like that without a single draw so it wasn;t him not that he would have done that anyway. Someone pretending to be Fischer could have known all Fischer's previous opponents (many fans of Fischer know all his official or important previous games and opponents off by heart). Definately no doubt that was a con job and is surprising that Short has fallen for it! Bobby Fischer was a brilliant chess genous but he wasn't so great that he could have beaten Short in his prime 8-0 lol.
jason williams
jason williams 2 ヶ月 前
@Γρηγόρης Αράπης I honestly do not think so. Bobby Fischer was a great player but he wasn't 500 elo better than Short like whoever it is that is playing him in that match. I have to disagree. Do you actually believe that Fischer was that much better than Short who at the time was around elo 2700?
Γρηγόρης Αράπης
@jason williams I think that this proves that the opponent was Fischer. I mean lets take it logically. Any other chess master would have took it public. And any chess engine maker would have also taken it public. Fischer is the only logical choice because Fischer didn't disclose his private or online matches.
jason williams
jason williams 2 ヶ月 前
@Γρηγόρης Αράπης my point is that no human being even Kasparov could have beaten Short 8-0 and beaten him like that so that only leaves one possible answer it was someone using a computer. Not the computer programs like Fritz 6 or whatever that was available for anyone to buy but a super computer capable of playing a ridiculous high level even back in 2000.
Γρηγόρης Αράπης
It 2000 and it was a bullet game. There were no Chess engines that powerful then. If it was I am sure that the makers of that engine would brag about their master creation to be able even from nonsense moves to turn the tide against a master such as Short.

I kind of like Fischer's approach to chess theory and people taking it super seriously. I liked chess in High School where I played with my friends during lunch. There chess was a social experience where we would constantly be joking and messing with each other, if you blundered you would both laugh and things like that. One of my friends often did weird openings just for fun. Like he would move his pawn to a3 or h3, then move his rook one sport forward and one spot back repeatedly until you did something that forced him to stop, like threaten the rook or do the 4 move checkmate. That was fun, especially as the starting position of pieces is actually pretty strong and gets weaker the more you move and create openings. Anyway, stuff like that is absent when you have people playing in deadpan silence, or across computer screens and applying theory. I really don't like how pretentious some people take chess as well, it's just a game, I don't really think being a really good chess player is all that different to being a really good fighting game player or a really good RTS player. They'll all about mind games, making split second decisions and technique, the only difference is that chess is balanced.

@Woof Woof You don't understand Fischer, his mentality, preparation and resolve. Just because someone is born in the modern era it doesn't mean they can outclass anyone from the past or vice versa. You can only beat what is in front of you at the time. When Fischer was playing the likes of Tal and Spassky, he prepared his games by studying the style and percentages of his opponents and if Fischer suddenly appeared today he'd study Carlsen for perhaps a few months then set about his preparation to beat him. Don't forget that Carlsen can also be put out of his comfort zone too and Fischer always found a way. Fischer read over a thousand chess books and studied every player in history dating back into the 19th Century and beyond. You think a few fancy moves from Carlsen will confuse one of the greatest chess minds that ever lived? Carlsen is king at the moment for one reason and one reason only, there are no more Bobby Fischer's left in this world or people that played like Tal who would confuse Carlsen into an early bath.

@Orange Waffles the problem is people now underate fischer in hopes and beliefs that chess champions now is definately stronger than chess champions in the olden days but its not proven and its a biased. I dont think an ordinary human would be able to play 3 unconventional moves in the opening and still beat some of the worlds top players. I mean whos ever heard of an opening that spoils castling and moves the king to the centre. Thats the brilliance of bobby fischer, the same guy who beat boris spasky at that time who has never lost a chess match with a variation of an opening (that i cant rmbr), without playing his usual openings or memorising chess openings
Kaden Cr
Kaden Cr ヶ月 前
@Orange Waffles Actually many peoples point about modern chess being better than olden chess is not really valid. Modern chess is only slightly better than olden chess. In this video even nigel short himself claimed that fischer was better than garry kasporov, who has been able to draw against people like hikaru whom has spent his entire life studying kasporovs career. I think its safe to say fischer>kasporov=hikaru. And the fact that fischer is alr able to beat the top 2 in the world overall shows he could probably beat magnus given that he stayed on and played chess, even without using engines
