From the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, Japan gracefully rode the wave of prosperity. With unparalleled economic growth, a rural exodus at its peak and unprecedent cultural openness, Japan was the perfect breeding ground not only for imaging the future...but not needing to for; because its present was already perfect. Thus, with young office workers receiving exorbitant salaries and young couples being able to afford the buying of big houses, a cosmopolitan life arose around cities where everyone wanted to live. That was the Japanese dream: the Tokyo that never sleeps. During the day, let's go to the office; at night, let's go to discos and clubs that crowded the city. But a new Japan also needs new music, far from the enka, the USA-oriented psychedelic 60s rock or traditional folk, more elderly-appropriate, and that's where city pop came into play: music by and for the taste of young salarymen and male and female students with a very bright future. So what do we mean about city pop? A mixture of everything that hit in the West towards the end of the 70s. That's to say: take out the mixer and press in good doses of AOR, not a little funk, a good jet of disco and the promotion of some shiny and energetic young star who could welcome a grateful touch of jazz and techno improvisation. Adults couldn't follow these catchy, intense and cheerful sounds. Young generations were going to set the rhythm from then on and television and radio promoted this "new" genre as if it was the "revolution of the century".

Japan in the 80s was on top of the world like China is becoming today when it ruled the car industry, it ruled commercial electronics, it ruled in pop culture, food, vidya games, anime... then Japan was called into the office for a word with its boss America! Now TADA! Japan.... Korea then took over very quickly but never reached the heights Japanese companies did.... so Korean companies never had the impact Japanese companies did.... Also people forget when the US actually hated the Japanese and did the same number on the Japanese that theyre doing to the Chinese.... the US were racist towards the Japanese..... the Japanese and Korean had to fall in line / hang back OR ELSE!

I discovered Plastic Love because my girlfriend (now fiancee, she's japanese) asked me if I knew it when started to play in a karaoke, where we went two years ago, in Shinjuku. She sang it quite well although her voice is lower... I must thank her for taught me this classic, 'cause within a few months I was already immersed in the city pop (and my style has always been heavy metal...). But it's so addictive, exciting, melancholic and warm at the same time, purely from the 80s, a type of music that instantly grabs you.

@Sleuth Entertainment the appeal of City Pop is exoticism. for millennial/Gen Z Americans, soft Disco/Soul/Funk is automatically more intriguing when it's made by Japanese people rather than African Americans the biggest internet hits (like Plastic Love and Junko Ohashi's Telephone Number) are pretty much indistinguishable from late 70's American music. They literally did not invent anything they just sang in Japanese that's the difference.
RTTV PLUG
RTTV PLUG 18 日 前
@Sleuth Entertainment city pop literally dont exist lol its not a genre it's a label that was created later on. It's literally just American funk, old school R&B, soul. Japanese people didn't invent anything with city pop they just sang in Japanese that's the difference lol.
Sleuth Entertainment
@RTTV PLUG I know black people made the funk, the soul, the gospel, the blues in America... They did a lot of things. But city pop, as an official music style, was born in Japan. You can get angry but it'll still be true. Please, don't own everything
RTTV PLUG
RTTV PLUG 19 日 前
@Sleuth Entertainment actually they did they even were producing and helping some of the Japanese artists with their songs in the beginning stages. Type "black history in city pop reddit" you'll see a guy breaking everything down.

You could argue you like this more than American 80's music, but not that it's necessarily better. It's not like music was stale in the 80's here like it is now. The 80's was an era of intense experimentation in music, with advances in synth technology and other areas of alternative instrumentation, including new experimentation in Prog Rock, metal, the emergence of what would become Power Metal pioneered by hair bands like Stryper, upbeat electronic pop sounds, and more. The spirit of inventiveness from the 60's and 70's had not yet faded away.

The songs that brings you to a summer night of Tokyo in the 80s, that you didn't even exist or experienced. This atmosphere of wealth and hope about positive future and everything, even made those songs arose to the mixture of those atmosphere full of happiness, immesurable feelings that makes you chill out and stop thinking about the things which makes you a negative person. These songs makes us to imagine that if we open the window, there will be a shining neon signs and blinding lights on the road. so as I do. whether you're in a little room in a small building with a tiny bed and staring at the window, or you're at a stunning skyskraper and on an enormous bed, you could share this feeling in the time and at that place. And it seems like it still does, but everywhere on earth this time.

I enjoy the fact that a lot of songs from Japan in the 80's doesn't have female singers with extremely girly/high pitched voices, but soothing and full bodied tones instead... ... Seriously, I have very sensitive hearing. A lot of the kawaii songs people like nowadays just make my ears ring after a short while. Nothing against them, but it seems I have little choice but sift through whole playlists sometimes. I'm thankful we can find things from different decades to listen to online.

Some great stuff here I haven't heard on any other city pop playlists. The picture of Misato from Evangelion isn't quite 80s appropriate, but I get the mood of it. Major volume changes in My Love, but might be the best that could be done with the old vinyl.

I'm listening to this 80's Japanese pop music playlist while playing Forza Motorsport 3 and I'm driving an Italian car on an American track, there's really nothing more satisfying than driving (even if it's in a game) while listening to citypop.🚗🌃🌇🌆

@South Coast Inventors yeah, i actually am learning japanese step by step. My first lenguage is italian, and japanese its totally different. The way you make a sentence is articulated more like english than italian. But i learned english pretty well, so from this point of view i can make it. The problem for me is associated the japanese alphabet to the meaning of the words. Its easy for me with words that are the same even in italian, like sushi/すし or for words that i can understand the meaning because of the culture arrived to me from movies and anime like teacher/sensei/せんせい or row/ito/いと (from akai ito/red row) world/sekai/世界 (from one piece) or inu/いぬ cat/neko/ねこ. But many other words even if i can distingue them while they are pronounced or when i read them, it is very hard to associate them to something. And this goes wilder and wilder with katakana and kanji. But yeah, i know its normal, this is how all other languages, exept the one we know since born, works. Btw yeah i'm learning hiragana, i currently know approximately 70/80% of hiragana alphabet, but sometimes i still do mistakes. The cool thing about hiragana is the " put on some letters. This makes more simple learn them than if they were without " and written in a completely new way. I refer to letters such as た/だ, or か/が. Also yeah, when i started to learn japanese i ve read of the US article says it takes approximately 2000 hours to learn it. And i think its pretty accurate, even if i bet that going on a trip to Japan for a couple of months would make the learn of that beautiful lenguage really more easier and faster. 元気でね!

@Twilight Tiger64-Falcom Fanatic yeah you are right. I translated (using google translate and other sites) one song from the first Detective Conan/Meitanten Konan/Case Closed movie and i noticed how much it can be different from japanese to english to my first lenguage (italian). Japanese has some words that the meaning cant be translated properly in other lenguages, and in a song, this is most intensified has ever. ありがとう!
South Coast Inventors
Yeah according to the diplomatic core of the US it only takes 2000 hours. To reach decent fluency. Japanese is hard for westerners because of the three alphabet, sentence structure, honorifics, different sentence structures, word order in sentences. If you want to learn Japanese do your self a favor and learn Hiragana, Katakana and about 200 of the most common words before you worry about grammar. Also never use romanji except for learning the alphabet, romanji will slow your learning I speak from experience.
Twilight Tiger64-Falcom Fanatic
頑張って下さい!-A learner of Japanese. Even if you don't learn Japanese, you can still appreciate the music. But with learning the language, you can appreciate these songs so much more than any English translation could even hope to provide. Your outlook on the world will be so different with Japanese, that you'll slowly think, "What was I doing all this time? The world is so different from before...I love it!" 絶対に諦めないで下さい!
